In order to avoid unnecessary heat loss through thermal bridges, some simple design principles can be followed:
1. building
1.1 compact building form instead of a winding ground plan

2. avoidance of cooling fins. Components projecting beyond the building structure contribute to increased heat losses. Examples:
2.1 Base plate instead of strip foundation

2.2 Flat verge / eaves instead of parapet with internal drainage

2.3 Balconies in front of the façade / Isobasins instead of cantilevered floor slabs

3. windows
3.1 Avoiding roller shutters
3.2 Installation of the windows in the insulation level instead of behind the wall stop

4. exterior walls:
4.1 for solid masonry without ETICS: lightweight interior walls instead of solid walls
5. cellar
5.1 Avoiding unheated cellars
5.2 for unheated cellars: lightweight interior walls instead of solid walls on the ground floor
5.3 For unheated basements in old buildings: Flank insulation in the insulation level of the basement ceiling
5.4 for unheated cellars in new buildings: Kimmstein in the insulation level of the cellar ceiling
5.5 for heated cellars in old buildings: Flank insulation in the insulation level of the base plate
5.6 for heated cellars in new buildings: Kimmstein in the insulation level of the base plate
6. roof
6.1 Rafter-mounted insulation
